There are 3 principles of Permaculture:
1.	Earth Care
2.	People Care and
3.	Fair share (which covers reduction to consumption and sharing of seeds, plants and knowledge )

Students learn the life skills of growing organic food and the systems involved. The Edible School Gardens program is kid driven:
•	the students design the garden
•	the students implement the garden with the local school community
•	the students maintain the garden
•	the students enjoy the food from the garden
•	experience the different methods of cooking food from the garden

Please bring a plate of food to share (preferably local).

We would love your thoughts and ideas for Slow Food Mary Valley initiatives for our community for 2010 — please bring them along.

The Movie
The epic tale of a maverick Midwestern farmer. An outcast in his community, Farmer John bravely stands amidst a failing economy, vicious rumors, and violence. By melding the traditions of family farming with the power of art and free expression, this powerful story of transformation and renewal heralds a resurrection of farming in America.

The film is a haunting odyssey, capturing what it means to be different in rural America.

Director Taggart Siegel Collective Eye made the film in a most unusual way – shooting farmer John Peterson over 25-years of their evolving friendship, and using multiple media, from 8 mm home movies shot on the farm in the 50’s and 60’s to modern video -- allowing him to capture his alternately humorous, heartbreaking and spirited life with raw drama and intimacy.

With the death of his father during the late 60s, a teenaged John takes over the traditional family farm, slowly turning it into an experiment of art and agriculture, making it a haven for hippies, radicals and artists. The Real Dirt on Farmer John charts the end of this idealistic era as the farm debt crisis of the 80’s brings about the tragic collapse of the farm.

As the intricate weave of rural America unravels, vicious local rumors turn John into a scapegoat, condemning him as a Satan-worshipping drug-dealer. Threatened with murder, his home burned to the ground, John forsakes his farm and wanders through Mexico, where he is transformed by the soulfulness and pageantry of this ancient land. Mysteriously, his quest leads him back to his hostile homeland.

Defying all odds, he gradually transforms his land into a revolutionary farming community, a cultural mecca, where people work and flourish providing fresh vegetables and herbs to thousands of people every week.

The Peterson family farm has become Angelic Organics, one of the largest Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farms in the United States, a beacon of today’s booming organic farming movement.

We are returning to Blue Ginger Restaurant at the Evergreen Centre, as we found it to be such a fantastic venue providing us with good food and excellent service.

Our speaker will be Philippa Schroder of the Hermitage Foundation which was founded in 1975 and is well known on the Sunshine Coast for their stalls in the local Farmer's Markets and their Eumundi Furniture Shop showcasing their own furniture.

Self Sufficiency and Community as a primary purpose has been their own by-law for thirty five years. They make hand made food that contains the produce of their own gardens and orchards for sale direct to customers at the markets – strictly locally.

Passionately interested in the Wholeness of things and how this can heal the planet they are far from sentimental and impractical – they are well known for their dedication to quality and industriousness.

The Community was originally inspired after extensive time spent at the Findhorn Foundation in Scotland which has been in existence for almost 50 years where it is said that vegetables and fruit were produced with the aid of the devas and nature spirits – on soil that was almost pure sand and buffeted by gales from the north sea.

The aims of the Hermitage are closely allied to those of the Slow Food Movement, Permaculture and the Transition Towns Initiative and they use the WWOOF Scheme to recruit volunteers to both contribute to the overall purpose of the Hermitage and also to learn from their vast experience over many decades of actual practical experience.

This breakfast promises to be a fun occasion with some delicious food cooked by Ona Klova, Blue Ginger’s new chef.

Bookings are essential for catering purposes, to avoid disappointment book no later than Tuesday 23rd February 2010.

When Cuba lost access to Soviet oil in the early 1990’s the country faced an immediate crisis – feeding the population – and an ongoing challenge: how to create new low-energy society. Cuba transformed from large, fossil-fuel intensive farming to small, less energy-intensive organic farms and urban gardens, and from a highly industrial society to a more sustainable one.

This film tells the story of the Cuban people’s hard- ship, ingenuity and triumph over sudden adversity – through co-operation, conservation and community, told in their own words.

“Cuba survived an energy famine during the 1990’s, and how it did so constitutes one of the most important and hopeful stories of the past few decades. It is a story not just of individual achievement, but of the collective mobilisation of an entire society to meet an enormous challenge.” – Richard Heinberg, author of The Party’s Over, Powerdown

Slow Food international councillors – 40 representatives of the association, from 20 countries around the world - met on 13 and 14 June in the Tuscan town of Alberese to discuss the key strategies for the future of Slow Food. The meeting’s particular focus was on the further development of the Terra Madre network and the increasingly important involvement and leadership from youth.
A key outcome of the meeting is the introduction of a worldwide Terra Madre Day, with the first edition to be held on 10 December 2009 - Slow Food International’s twentieth anniversary. This day will be recognised by the Slow Food network, across the 150 countries in which it is active, to celebrate ‘eating local’ and the crucial work being done by the Terra Madre food communities – a network of farmers, artisan producers, cooks, academics and youth for sustainable food production launched by Slow Food in 2004.
‘Terra Madre Day is a way to celebrate our connection to the earth’, said Slow Food international president Carlo Petrini. ‘It doesn’t matter how we celebrate it - you can celebrate it at home, or organize a community or school event, the important thing is that we celebrate eating local.’
Petrini identified some of the key considerations at the base of the Slow Food philosophy to be celebrated and promoted through Terra Madre Day:
-	Food is a right for everyone;
-	Small-scale farming is the future;
-	Food sovereignty is key to communities;
-	Biodiversity is essential to a healthy food future;
-	We have the right to preserve our cultural and local identities;
-	Agriculture is closely linked to the environment;
-	Food production and trade must be socially just.
For more information on Terra Madre Day around the world click here.
Click here for more information about Terra Madre Day - Sunshine Coast Hinterland style!
